"When I became convinced that the Universe is natural that all the ghosts and gods are myths, there entered into my brain, into my soul, into every drop of my blood, the sense, the feeling, the joy of freedom. The walls of my prison crumbled and fell, the dungeon was flooded with light and all the bolts, and bars, and manacles became dust. I was no longer a servant, a serf, or a slave. There was for me no master in all the wide world, not even in infinite space. I was free.
free to think, to express my thoughts
free to live to my own ideal
free to live for myself and those I loved
free to use all my faculties, all my senses
free to spread imagination's wings
free to investigate, to guess and dream and hope
free to judge and determine for myself
free to reject all ignorant and cruel creeds, all the "inspired" books that savages have produced, and all the barbarous legends of the past
free from popes and priests
free from all the "called" and "set apart"
free from sanctified mistakes and holy lies
free from the fear of eternal pain
free from the winged monsters of night
free from devils, ghosts, and gods
For the first time I was free. There were no prohibited places in all the realms of my thought, no air, no space, where fancy could not spread her painted wings
no chains for my limbs
no lashes for my back
no fires for my flesh
no master's frown or threat
no following another's steps
no need to bow, or cringe, or crawl, or utter lying words.
I was free. I stood erect and fearlessly, joyously, faced all worlds. And then my heart was filled with gratitude, with thankfulness, and went out in love to all the heroes, the thinkers who gave their lives for the liberty of hand and brain for the freedom of labor and thought
to those who fell on the fierce fields of war
to those who died in dungeons bound with chains
to those who proudly mounted scaffold's stairs
to those whose bones were crushed, whose flesh was scarred and torn
to those by fire consumed
to all the wise, the good, the brave of every land, whose thoughts and deeds have given freedom to the sons of men.
And I vowed to grasp the torch that they had held, and hold it high, that light might conquer darkness still."
-Robert G. Ingersoll (1833-1899), "Why Am I An Agnostic?", 1896

We are part of the universe. Our earth was created from the universe and will one day be reabsorbed into the universe. We are made of the same matter as the universe. We are not in exile here: we are at home. It is here and nowhere else that we can see the divine face to face. If we erect barriers in our imagination - if we believe our real home is not here but in a land that lies beyond death - if we believe that the divine is found only in old books, or old buildings, or inside our head - then we will see this real, vibrant, luminous world as if through a glass darkly. The universe creates us, preserves us, destroys us. We are part of nature. Nature made us and at our death we will be reabsorbed into nature. We are at home in nature and in our bodies. This is where we belong; this is where we must find and make our paradise, not in some spirit world on the other side of the grave. If nature is the only paradise, then separation from nature is the only hell. When we destroy nature, we create hell on earth for other species and for ourselves. Nature is our mother, our home, our security, our peace, our past and our future. Science is inherently materialist. It always seek material explanations. It never accepts as an explanation that some spiritual force was at work - if it did, then science and technology would come to an end. Disease was once thought to be caused by witchcraft. Science gave it a material explanation which allowed us to control it. Magnetism at one time seemed like a spiritual force - Thales of Miletus thought that magnets were full of spirits. But then science provided a material explanation. In the same way scientific pantheism believes that everything that exists is matter or energy in one form or another. Nothing can exist, be perceived, or act on other things if it is not matter or energy. That does not mean that spiritual phenomena or forces cannot exist. It means that, if they do, they must in fact be material. In scientific pantheism, science becomes a part of the religious quest: the pursuit of deeper understanding of the Reality of which we are all part, deeper knowledge about the awe-inspiring cosmos in which we live, deeper knowledge of nature and the environment, so that we can better preserve the earth's wealth of natural diversity. In scientific pantheism, cognitive openness - listening to reality, to new evidence, to all the evidence, to other people's needs and feelings - becomes a sacred duty in all aspects of life from science to politics to domestic life. Of course, we cannot say that science endorses pantheism. Many religions today state their beliefs in ways that no-one can disprove, so they can and do co-exist with science. But scientific pantheism positively thrives on science. scientific discoveries continually underline the wonder and the mystery of Being, the immensity of the universe, and the complexity of nature. finished watching the elegant universe!!! and all three hours of it. the only thing i don't understand is how strings smoothen out the spatial fabric and mend the occasional rips on space-time. prolly bullshit anyway.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/elegant/-->THIS is MY HOMEPAGE. and i'm proud of it. fermilab so totally rocks btw. i shall go sweden next time and play with ze large hadron collider. hmm.

went sentosa on thurs with lets see...chuntsen shaun muthu posef quan and a few other ppl. met at harbourfront took bus into sentosa then monorail to palawan beach. then we buried muthu! and i sculpted out nice curvy lil boobies for him. arnd c cup liddat. which we later improvised nipples on using seashells ahahahhahaha. after that we kicked balls and whacked balls (read: soccer + volleyball) volleyball quite fun but i cant play soccer for nuts =\ then went to buy big gulp frm 7 eleven! ok so i didnt exactly buy anything...more of koped. people should be more wary when alwyn asks for "a sip". for why else can alwyn down big gulps in a single sip?

went with quan and guapoo after that for lunch at taka. quan has perfectly honed jenny-avoidance instincts i tell you. and to think i'd wanted to go to macs at first...*turns green*

6/24/2004 9:48:55 PM >sealt6< Thou shalt not travel at the speed of light.

hooyah!
im back!!
training camp kicked ass!!!
hooyah!!!!

ok seriously. camp was great...1st time ive seen the sec1s so enthusiatic sia. thank god mr tan got pissed and dismissed us all early during day3 newaza...or all that might never have happened. i'm seriously very proud of them though...actually started smiling when i saw them screaming their lungs out. that. is how ri judokas should be like. and with any luck, GRAND SLAM shall be within our grasp. and the legacy shall be reborn.

and though this camp might not be as tough as those of previous years...(very slack actually) but it was still worth it. gd job peoples. we'll just make it better next year ja? HOOAH!

i wasted my time at desmond chan's house today.
my (ri science club) teammates are hopeless.
and i can't believe im actually missing the 1st day of training camp just for that shit-for-brains nus competition.
so what if i sneaked out after lunch...people get bored.
go to hell. i only live once u noe.

some things just make me sick.

ive finally found out the reason why the quah sisters speak funny- they've served time in the uk before. woohoo

spent the whole day out today. morning woke up went to school got the dsp stuff from my locker and flagged a cab to mindef pass office. waited for a while for captain koh, then changed my ezlink to a visitor's pass and clandestinely infiltrated the mindef main biulding. spent some time discussing about my project before heading off for lunch at the mindef cafetaria which served food in very small portions. made some conversation with cpt koh's bunch which was very uhh lame. went back to naval logistics and spent the rest of the time fooling around with autocad.

left circa 1730 hours and hitched a ride home from this nice old civilian who knows cpt koh. drove me right into the carpark he did! nice person.

going there again on thursday and friday. in the meantime i have to master autocad. acks.

just gotten back from an extremely enlightening discussion at cck library with the rest of the astro quiz team who could make it (namely eesin + xinyang *claps*) about the all important astrogame!!! which occupies about 40% of the total marks attainable for the entire competition now why does that remind me of schoolwork.

so we've got it all planned out...a funkehh, creative, innovative and absof00kinglutely briLLIANT (card) game based somewhat along the lines of signals, daidee and umm heart attack? ...and all that, the brainchild of ONE highly gifted, intellectual being harboring vast resources of- ok i shall not delay the suspense anymore la. i came up with the idea.

so basically we were supposed to meet at cck mrt at 1. i went there at 1.10 and saw eesin standing there looking dejected and lonely. so i decided to brighten up his day! by sneaking up on him gripping the nape of his neck and yelling BOO! in his face =D
actually i wanted to do the old I STAB U ARH! thing. but it was in a crowded mrt station lo. didnt want anyone to get the worng idea so- haizz.

liked the look on his face nonetheless. turns out he arrived 15 minutes early. *sweatdrops* so we waited together for the rest of them for the next 10 minutes. can anyone be 20 minutes late? i think not. after which xinyang came (he lives in cck btw *kills xinyang*) and we all lived happ- no i mean we went to the library stormed the childrens section and took everyone host- NO i mean found a nice spot settled down and had some good clean fun (read: eesin reading children's books, xinyang reading astro books and me lying down on the ground getting a feel of my surroundings). after stoning like this for a rather long time we wento kfc for lunch.

after lunch we came back, got inspired and actually started doing work!! brainstormed awhile and came up with some really STUPID ideas (astronomy snap anyone?) but finally thanks to me the crisis was resolved. spent the rest of the time slowly building up on the game until 4. then we all went home and here i am typing this entry out and knowing full well that i am going to screw astro tomorrow.

over and out.
